VIDEO: Tackling FRQ 2 – Modeling a Non-periodic Context

Updated: 7 days ago

The AP Precalculus Exam features 40 multiple choice questions and 4 free response questions (FRQs). The FRQs are based on task models, meaning that each question has a predictable structure from year to year, and features mostly the same skills and function types. In a previous post, we discussed FRQ 1 which assesses multiple function concepts.

In this video, we share the structure of FRQ 2, including what students can expect in each part and subpart. We also identify the specific content that students should be familiar with for this question.

Important Take-aways:

  • FRQ 2 will always be about "Modeling a Non-periodic Context".

  • FRQ 2 allows the use of a graphing calculator and students should be comfortable graphing and evaluating a function model, storing values, and solving a system of equations.

  • FRQ 2 will ask students to write and solve a system of equations for the parameters of a polynomial, rational, exponential, or logarithmic function given information about a scenario in context .

  • FRQ 2 always includes a real-world context.

  • Only content from CED Unit 1 and CED Unit 2 is included in this FRQ.

  • Part (B) will ask students to calculate and analyze an average rate of change.

  • Part (C) will ask about the restrictions, limitations, or assumptions of the function model.

Time to Practice

Now that your students are comfortable with what FRQ 2 is all about, it's time to put this knowledge to the test! We've created a sample question in the style of FRQ 2 you can use to help your students practice their new skills.
