Instructions

Prep: To prepare for today’s review game, print multiple copies of the problem set. There should be enough copies for each group to have one set. Cut up the problems and arrange them in your classroom somewhere that is easily accessible and where you will be standing. Each group will need a different color set of sticky notes. Project the 6x5 Connect 4 grid found under “Additional Materials” or create your own on the whiteboard.

Play: Arrange students in groups of 3 or 4. Group members take turns coming up to the teacher to grab a problem. They work on the problem at their desks with their group members directly on the piece of paper (or whiteboard) and bring it up to you to check. If it is incorrect, you will simply say “No” and send them back to try again. If the answer is correct they get to place a sticky note on the Connect 4 board. Just like in Connect 4, the sticky notes obey the laws of gravity and can't float, meaning they have to be placed on the ground level or on top of another sticky note.

They must then send a different group member up to grab the next problem. We tell our students they must take turns writing the responses, but should of course be working as a group. You do not have to hand them out in any particular order but teams should keep track of which lettered problems they have already completed. The first team to get 4 in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) wins!
